Protective Relay Testing
Relay Test Methods
Power System Faults

Types of Relay Testing

Design verification Test
This testing is performed by designers of protective relays to uncover design errors and to verify the performance and function of the relay design.

Commissioning test
This is a comprehensive test of all relay functions and auxiliary equipment to ensure that it operates as intended. This testing is performed on a protection system or individual protective relays just before putting the system into operation/service.

Periodic maintenance/verification
This testing is performed on a relay at regularly scheduled intervals to ensure that all basic relay functions are operating porperly and to check for changes in the characteristics and/or performance and make any calibrations or adjustments necessary.

Relay evaluation
This testing is performed in order to evaluate the applicability and performance of a protective relay or relay system before it is used on a power system. This involves checking that the relay meets published critical performance specifications, ensuring the relay meets requirements of the intended application, and performing hypothetical "what-if" testing to determine the device's reaction to abnormal but possible real-world conditions.

Production test
This is testing of relays coming off the assembly line to ensure that the correct components are installed, the correct software is loaded and that no defects exist prior to delivery to the customer.

Manta Test Systems products are used in all of these types of testing.
